Engine Problem - Revs diminished till it wouldn't start

Postby Ninja0n3 on Tue Jan 13, 2009 3:35 am

I'll make it as detailed as I can:
I came back from Cuba, ran into a few electrical difficulties (battery went under startup level), neglected to check the oil level. Ran with the car like this since last monday.

This morning I noticed the car was accelerating strangely: when I'd press the throttle I wouldn't get the same kind of rev response that I normally do, kind of like it's lagging in getting to where it needed to be.

Went to school, left the car parked there. On my way back home, the car started kind of coughing the acceleration: the revs became jerky (going up and down) and as I pressed harder, the revs wouldn't go up anymore.
I was flooring it and I wouldn't go above 3k RPM.

Got home, checked the oil level, it was under the oil bar.
Went and bought some oil, poored it in.
Restarted the engine to see if that made it better. It made no difference.
I noticed there was some oil on the engine head.
I also tried pulling the throttle cable at the engine, to see if it was a lose throttle cable. It wasn't: I was getting the same kind of reaction.
Eventually, the revs started disminishing even though I was flooring it (in neutral).
I stopped the engine and when I tried to start again, and it wouldn't start: the engine would crank, but it wouldn't start.

The water level seemed fine, and the water temperature has been normal for the last week, so I didn't notice any anomaly.
Today was the first time I noticed this problem.
The car ran smoothly since I came back and until now

Last time I had a problem similar to this, I had to replace the cap distributor; It was replaced about two years ago with a used unit (I think).

Let me know If I can clarify anything, or wasn't precise enough on something.

Any help would be appreciated on this, since I don't have a beater and I need my car back on the road asap...

Thanks a lot

Did you have an engine check for the past 2 years for which you were supposed to use my obd reader but never made it? Do you still have an engine check?
where on the head did you see oil? You should check your oil level every week, my sr doesn't burn a drop of oil and I still check the level at every gas fill.

Can't go over 3000rpm sounds like it's in limp mode. But from what you say it sounds like a maf issue, or a connection going to/from the mafs. Check the plug on the mafs.

If you suspect you distributor, check for spark. With the car started do you feel a difference if you disconnect each spark plug wire one by one? Did you check the spark plugs? any oil on them? Check the dist. cap for corrosion/humidity traces.

Check Engine light still on.

Dropped the car this morning at the garage, I don't have the tools to fix the car anyways.
It wouldn't start anymore, so I'm not sure if it's spark related.

They just called me saying they had to go in the trunk (they couldn't open it); it might be related to the fuel pump...
That's pretty much all the info I've got.

The distributor cap looked fine.
The oil came out from the top (where the oil cap is located), so there was oil around that area going towards the back, all of it on top of the head (I didn't see any oil around the head seals or anything like that).
There was oil around some of the sparks, I didn't know how to take them out

I have to admit the oil situation was a big negligence from my part... I won't be making that mistake again.
Hopefully I didn't blow my engine, though I'm wondering what the chances are that might have happened.
I didn't see any smoke or hear any clunking/weird noises, nor did I get any strange smells aside from the oil on top of the head.

Even though I've read the MAF many times, I'm not sure what part that is (piece that goes before the air filter??).

Update -- Fuel pump is dead.

LF: Fuel pump, need within the next 48h...
